Further genetic evidence for the reproductive isolation of green sea anemone Actinia prasina Gosse from common intertidal beadlet anemone Actinia equina (L.)

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Earher work on Actin~a indicated that a green morph, which has been described as A. prasina Gosse, 1s genetically distinct from the more common A. equina (L.). Sympatnc populations of green and other morphs of Actinja were obtained from Fleshwick Bay (Isle of Man) and compared by enzyme electrophoresis and by nematocyst analysis. No nematocyst differences were found, but allele frequencies at several enzyme loci differed significantly. It is concluded that at Fleshwick Bay A. prasina is genetically… Show more

“…prusinu and Actiniu sp., however, the situation may be quite different. These species can reach high densities in the intertidal zone (Haylor, Thorpe & Carter, 1984), but the levels of genetic differentiation between local populations can be very high (SolC-Cava & Thorpe, 1987). Subdivisions of natural populations into more or less isolated units produces a decrease in effective population size (Kimura, 1983).…”

“…prasina (Sole-Cava and Thorpe, 1987) although see Schama et al (2005), but additional cryptic species perhaps also exist, particularly those morphotypes that differ in the colour of the pedal disc (grey/green versus red/pink/orange). These morphotypes show clear differences in intertidal distribution (red/pink morphs are found higher up the shore with green/grey morphs lower down the intertidal zone) and have been shown to present diagnostic allozyme genotypes at both malate dehydrogenase and hexokinase loci (Quicke and Brace, 1984;Quicke et al, 1983).…”
