Further Psychometric Support for the 10‐Item Version of the Perceived Stress Scale

Abstract: Because of increased stress conditions in college students, updated psychometrics of the Perceived Stress Scale, 10‐item version (PSS‐10; S. Cohen & G. Williamson, 1988) are necessary. Participants were 281 undergraduates at 3 public universities. An exploratory factor analysis revealed a 2‐factor structure measuring Perceived Helplessness and Perceived Self‐Efficacy. Normative results, internal consistencies, and construct validity were supported. The current findings reveal that the PSS‐10 is a reliable and … Show more

“…Respondents were asked to indicate how often they felt a certain way over the last month on a scale from 0 (never) to 4 (very often). This scale has been found to be reliable and valid previously in student populations (Roberti, Harrington & Storch, 2006). In this study, the scale had good internal reliability (Cronbach's α = .85).…”

“…Possible scores ranged from 0 to 40 with higher scores indicating higher levels of stress. In a 2006 study, the psychometrics of the PSS were updated using 285 college students (Roberti, Harrington, & Storch, 2006), which found the internal consistency of this instrument to be .89 and support for convergent validity with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory -trait version with strong correlations (.62 to .73). For the purposes of this study, scores on the PSS were treated as a continuous variable so that all levels of perceived stress could be analyzed.…”
