Further psychometric testing of the home healthcare nurse job satisfaction scale

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to refine the psychometric properties of the Home Healthcare Nurses' Job Satisfaction Scale (HHNJS). A theoretical model of job satisfaction had been used to develop the 30-item HHNJS, representing nine components of job satisfaction. Psychometric properties suggested the need for further refinement. Revised items and construct definitions were subjected to psychometric testing with 2,274 home healthcare nurses. Eight independent subscales consistent with the theoretical model wer… Show more

“…The Ellenbecker model was based on empirical research related to job satisfaction and retention, models of nurse retention proposed by Alexander et al (1998) and Tauton et al (1997), and components of Neal's theory of home healthcare nursing (Ellenbecker, 2004). The model was subsequently refined by removing variables and adding others based on further research and evidence from the literature (Ellenbecker, Byleckie, & Samia, 2008). The theoretical model used in this study shows that characteristics of job satisfaction, individual nurse characteristics, and agency and market characteristics are directly related to intent to stay; and directly and indirectly related to retention.…”

“…Despite the limited existing literature, the development of the Home Healthcare Nurses’ Job Satisfaction Scale (HHNJS) [ 18 ] was initiated in 1998 to measure job satisfaction among home healthcare nurses. Modifications to improve internal consistency have been made by Ellenbecker, Byleckie, & Samia [ 18 ] who have further emphasized the need for reliable, valid, and useful tools. The final HHNJS was composed of 30 items across eight subscales (see Additional files 1 , 2 ).…”
