Fused empirical mode decomposition and wavelets for locating combined damage in a truss-type structure through vibration analysis

Abstract: Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a relevant topic for civil systems and involves the monitoring, data processing and interpretation to evaluate the condition of a structure, in order to detect damage. In real structures, two or more sites or types of damage can be present at the same time. It has been shown that one kind of damaged condition can interfere with the detection of another kind of damage, leading to an incorrect assessment about the structure condition. Identifying combined damage on structure… Show more

“…It is used for analyzing heart beats or EEG signals while a subject is performing a particular cognitive task [23].It is applied to analyze wave signals propagating through structures such as vibration and detect anomalies such as cracks [18]. Image processing is another area of application in which it was used for filtering and feature detection [24].On a more macro scale, it has been applied to extracting periodic modes of epidemic outbreak time-series, and analyzing time-series data from weekly mortgage rates [25,26].…”

Another area where HHT has been extensively used is structural engineering [18]. While they all employed HHT, the manner of application may vary.…”

“…Using the improved discrete particle swarm optimization, Lian et al (2013) proposed a novel fitness function derived from the nearest neighbor index to overcome the drawbacks of the effective independence method for the optimal sensor placement in large structures. A single waveletpacket and the empirical mode decomposition method are combined with artificial neural networks for the online identification-location of single or multiple-combined damage in a five-bay truss-type structure (Garcia-Perez1 et al, 2013).…”

“…The nonmodel-based methods detect damage through vibrational signals directly without use of a structural model. The non-model-based methods mainly include methods based on the change in natural frequency (Lee and Chung, 2000;Kim et al, 2003), the change of structural vibration mode (Khoo et al, 2004), the change of structural flexibility or stiffness (Yan and Golinval, 2005), the transfer function (Park and Park, 2005), the statistic information (Iwasaki et al, 2004;López-Díez et al, 2005;Garcia-Perez et al, 2013), the power flow (Li et al, 2004), and so on. The model-based methods detect damage based on predetermined structural models, in which the model updating methods are widely used (Sinha and Friswell, 2003;Sadr et al, 2007;Zhao et al, 2009;Lei et al, 2012;Liu and Duan, 2012;Erdogan and Bakir, 2013;Liu et al, 2013).…”
