Future Directions

Abstract

This epilogue presents a collection of testimonials from a group of individuals whose lives have all been affected by Down syndrome. It provides a voice to the mothers, fathers, siblings, and to individuals with Down syndrome themselves, allowing them to recount their journeys with the condition. These real-life narratives also provide insight into different familial views on systemic supports, educational resources, and methods of diagnosis, among other things. Some of these individuals founded organizations to advocate for persons with Down syndrome, such as the Down Syndrome Information Alliance, Down Syndrome International, and the Down Syndrome Research Institute. These perceptions reflect the experiences of a very small number of people whose lives are affected by the condition. Nevertheless, these accounts can be sources of awareness and inspiration.
