Future research directions in design of reliable communication systems

Abstract: In this position paper on reliable networks, we discuss new trends in the design of reliable communication systems. We focus on a wide range of research directions including protection against software failures as well as failures of communication systems equipment. In particular, we outline future research trends in software failure mitigation, reliability of wireless communications, robust optimization and network design, multilevel and multirealm network resilience, multiple criteria routing approaches in m… Show more

“…Nowadays, without the consideration of energy [26], any one cannot afford transmission [27,28,32]. In addition to this, the bar on usage of energy resources put a constraint for data transmission [33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. To consider the concept energy consumption, the topic of green computing was explored in [40,41] for data transmission.…”

“…The concept of Software Defined Networking (SDN), in which the data and control planes are decoupled [22], [23], has drawn tremendous attention in recent years, and provides new possibilities in traffic engineering and, hence, also in reacting to failures. In SDN, the control plane, represented by SDN controllers, computes the forwarding rules and installs them in the data plane switches, which forward the packets according to those rules.…”

“…This has been the key principle behind IPFRR mechanisms: precomputing backup paths for possible failure scenarios before the failure actually occurs so that the backup path is readily available and can be used at the very moment when the failure occurs. Switching over to a precomputed backup path is orders of magnitude faster than waiting for the ordinary convergence process in the network to be completed …”
