FuturICT: Participatory computing to understand and manage our complex world in a more sustainable and resilient way

Abstract: Abstract. We have built particle accelerators to understand the forces that make up our physical world. Yet, we do not understand the principles underlying our strongly connected, techno-socio-economic systems. We have enabled ubiquitous Internet connectivity and instant, global information access. Yet we do not understand how it impacts our behavior and the evolution of society. To fill the knowledge gaps and keep up with the fast pace at which our world is changing, a Knowledge Accelerator must urgently be c… Show more

“…This makes sense in a more and more interconnected world, where the events occurring in one place can have tremendous consequences on the other side of the globe [12]. For instance, migrations, the diffusion of diseases, the consumption or production of goods should now all be considered at planetary scale and involve the whole world population.…”

“…Isso passa a ter sentido em um mundo cada vez mais interligado, onde os eventos que ocorrem em um lugar podem ter sérias consequências do outro lado do mundo (HELBING et al, 2012). Por exemplo, a migração, a difusão de doenças, o consumo ou produção de mercadorias devem agora ser considerados em escala planetária e envolvem toda a população mundial.…”

“…In the programmatic document "FuturICT -New Science and Technology to Manage Our Complex, Strongly Connected World" by Dirk Helbing [69] (see also [70] in this volume), a key figure depicts the Innovation Accelerator as occupying a central position in the plan, serving and supporting the various FuturICT components (Fig. 8).…”
