Fuzzy AHP-Based Design Performance Index for Evaluation of Ferries

Abstract: Within waterborne public transportation (WPT), one often observes a mismatch between the operational requirements and ferry characteristics. A method to holistically evaluate ferries with respect to local requirements could lead to tailored procurement and targeted refurbishment of existing fleet. In this study, we develop a structure for operational requirements and use it as a basis for a ferry evaluation methodology. The requirements’ structure follows a three-level hierarchy starting from broad vessel desi… Show more

“…Due to different types of indicators and significant numerical differences in ecological development, a combination of qualitative and quantitative AHP was chosen for analysis [23][24][25]. By decomposing complex problems into several levels and factors, and performing simple comparisons and calculations between each factor, different scheme weights can be obtained [26,27].…”

“…One can further discretize the broad outline within the constraints set by material, technological, economic, legal, environmental and human-related considerations that change with time [5]. Correspondingly, an operational requirements hierarchy is developed in Cheemakurthy and Garme [13] starting with route type on the primary level, followed by vessel requirements at the secondary level and ferry performance requirements at the tertiary level as shown in Fig. 1.…”

“…Water-borne transportation is attaining significance as a viable solution to combat the escalating pollution and congestion challenges in cities, also seamlessly integrating into the multimodal transport network (Cheemakurthy & Garme, 2022). There is an ongoing discussion regarding the extent to which prominence advancement in ship design, regulation, technology, and risk management systems have contributed to a 70 % drop in shipping accidents and losses over the past decade (Allianz Global, 2021).…”
