Gamma linolenic acid suppresses hypoxia-induced gastric cancer cell growth and epithelial-mesenchymal transition by inhibiting the Wnt/b-catenin signaling pathway

Abstract: Introduction. Gastric cancer is one of the most common malignancies in China and the fifth most common cancer in the world. Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) was reported to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect and mechanism of GLA on gastric cancer cell growth under hypoxic conditions. Material and methods. The hypoxia models of SGC-7901 and MGC-803 cells were established, and then were exposed to different concentrations of 50, 100 or 200 μM GLA.… Show more

“…In addition, GLA has been reported to decrease the expression of the metastasis-associated protein osteonectin (or SPARC) and increase the expression of metastasis suppressor genes to inhibit tumor metastasis. GLA could also decrease the β-catenin expression of Wnt/b-catenin signaling pathway to inhibit gastric cancer cell growth and EMT induced by hypoxia ( 30 ). Additionally, polyunsaturated fatty acids, including GLA, could induce an apoptosis of colon cancer cells ( 31 ).…”

“…In addition, bufalin, a bioactive polyhydroxy steroid compound isolated from Venenum Bufonis, induced apoptosis of AGS by down-regulating Wnt/ASCL2 expression (Wang, Cai, et al, 2018b). Furthermore, gamma linolenic acid, a naturally occurring omega-6 unsaturated fatty acid, induced the apoptosis of SGC-7901 and MGC-803 by inhibiting Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway (Wang, Shi, & Gong, 2020c). Therefore, subsequent studies should focus on the effect of natural products targeting the Wnt/β-catenin signaling to curb GC.…”
