Ganglioside patterns in human spinal cord

Abstract: Objective: To examine the distribution of gangliosides in human cervical and lumbar spinal cord. Setting: Magdeburg, Germany. Methods: The ganglioside distribution of human cervical and lumbar spinal cord enlargements from 10 neurological normal patients was analyzed. Gangliosides were isolated from di erent areas corresponding to the columna anterior, columna lateralis and columna posterior. Results: Ganglioside GfD1b/GD1b and GD3 were the most abundant gangliosides in all examined tissues. The total concentr… Show more

“…To determine whether GSL levels are modified in the spinal cords of ALS patients, we examined cervical spinal tissue samples collected at autopsy from six male ALS patients and six age-matched male controls. In contrast to earlier studies that examined total GSL levels in the whole spinal cord (10), we analyzed gray matter (GM) and ventral white matter (VWM) samples separately, because regional variation in total ganglioside levels within segments of spinal cord have previously been reported (24). We also measured individual molecular isoforms of GSLs because of their distinct biological functions (25).…”

“…Interestingly, the ganglioside profile of a subject changes with age. In an adult spinal cord, GD1b and GD3 are among the most prevalent gangliosides throughout the anterior and posterior regions of both the cervical and lumbar spinal cord [12]. The total concentration of GM2 and GM3 ganglioside is less than 5%.…”
