Gas separation with mixed matrix membranes obtained from MOF UiO-66-graphite oxide hybrids

Abstract: UiO-66-GO hybrids were obtained by hydrothermal synthesis of MOF UiO-66 (a Zr terephthalate) on graphite oxide (GO). These hybrids with appropriate texture and presence of nanosized MOF particles (in the ca. 30-100 nm range) have been used as fillers to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with two different polymers, polysulfone (PSF) and polyimide (PI), as the matrixes, with contents varying between 0 and 32 wt%. The MMMs were applied to the separation of H 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /CH 4 mixtures at different tempe… Show more

“…UiO‐66–NH 2 nanoparticles can be homogeneously dispersed in the membrane, and their internal pores can be connected to PIM‐1 micropores to construct the interconnected micropore network in MMMs, thereby eliminating the interfacial voids. Other UiO‐66‐based fillers, including UiO‐66–GO hybrid, ZIF‐8@UiO‐66–NH 2 hybrid, Ti‐exchanged UiO‐66, UiO‐66(Hf)–(OH) 2 , etc., have been proven to be effective in improving the separation performance of pure polymeric membranes.…”

“…In the near future, molecular hydrogen will become an important fuel, as it is composed of the lightest element we have ever known, and it provides a high combustion heat . Furthermore, hydrogen fuel is environmentally friendly because the only product of its combustion is pure water . According to recent studies, one of the biggest challenges of utilizing hydrogen fuel is its storage .…”

“…In a further gas separation test for H 2 and CH 4 , there was an evident enhancement in both the selectivity and permeability of the membranes obtained from the UiO‐66‐GO hybrids. The reasons for this enhancement may be the exfoliation of GO and the addition of defects in the hybrid layers, which further caused its superior gas separation …”
