Summary: Northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean gastropods previously ascribed to the buccinid genus Pollia Gray, 1837 are more correctly classified in the genus Aplus de Gregorio, 1885. Using an integrative taxonomy approach combining molecular, morphological and geographic data, we revisit the limits of the extant species in the area, and propose a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis based on 66 specimens from various localities in the Mediterranean Sea, including type localities of some nominal taxa. We used a preliminary morphological inspection, followed by a DNA-barcoding approach to propose species hypotheses, subsequently consolidated using additional data (phylogenetic, geographic and refined morphological data). Seven species hypotheses were eventually retained within our molecularly assayed samples, versus three classical morphologically recognized species. Among these, three correspond to Aplus dorbignyi (Payreaudeau, 1826) with its hitherto unrecognized geographical cognates A. gaillardoti (Puton, 1856) (eastern Mediterranean) and Aplus nodulosus (Bivona Ant., 1832) (Sicily); two closely related, yet considerably divergent, lineages are treated as a single species under Aplus scaber (Locard, 1892); the classically admitted Aplus scacchianus (Philippi, 1844) is confirmed by molecular evidence; Mediterranean populations attributable to Aplus assimilis (Reeve, 1846) may represent either cryptic native populations or an ongoing invasion of the Mediterranean by what was hitherto considered to be a West African species; finally, specimens from the Strait of Gibraltar may represent an undescribed species, but we conservatively refrain from formally introducing it pending the analysis of more material, and it is compared with the similar Aplus campisii (Ardovini, 2014), recently described from Sicily and not assayed molecularly, and Aplus scaber.Keywords: Mollusca; gastropoda; cryptic species; DNA-barcoding; taxonomy. Muricids are commercially important gastropods and are exploited primarily for shell craft industries. They also occupy a niche in ornamental keeping. Studies on the larval development of muricids in Indian waters are few. Hence, an attempt was made to study with a focus on the optimum requirements for captive brood maintenance; regional variation in egg laying, intracapsular development and to estimate production potential of individual brooder (the length/ weight ranged from 80 -110 mm/49 -169 g (average 94.875 ± 3.980 mm/111.625 ± 14.870 g) of Chicoreus virgineus var. ponderosa collected off Tuticorin coast, Gulf of Mannar. Experimental airlift water circulation system fitted in 1 t FRP tanks having an overturn of 300% water is found suitable for long term maintenance and maturation of brooders with near cent percent survival over a year. Spontaneous breeding commenced from June'09. Eggs cases were "vase" shaped and measured 1.2 -1.5 cm in height. Egg case numbers varied between 110 and 140 and got reduced to 10 -40 during October and increased in Nov & December. Number of eggs within the egg case was highly variable ranging from 100 -380. Eggs were spherical, embedded in jelly mass within the egg case and measured 510 -608 µ (578 µ). Intra capsular development is detailed and compared with the earlier report on this species from other areas of Indian coast. Development took nearly 20 days and only few free living juveniles measuring between 1.7 -1.9 mm emerged and the rest of the eggs have functioned as "Nurse eggs". Average net production potential of a single viable egg case was estimated to be 6.7 nos for Chicoreus virgineus var. ponderosa of Tuticorin coast of Gulf of Mannar.

Abstract:The Sea of Japan is a marginal sea surrounded by narrow, shallow straits which became isolated from neighboring waters when the sea level fell during the Pleistocene glacial periods. In order to understand the influences of such paleoenvironmental changes on the formation of populations of marine organisms in the Sea of Japan, deep-sea whelks (genera Buccinum and Neptunea (Buccinidae)) are appropriate materials considering their low dispersal abilities through direct development. Deep-sea whelks are also important marine species for fisheries in the Sea of Japan. However, several taxonomical problems due to morphological variations and lack of knowledge about gene flows among local populations in deep-sea whelks may lead to inappropriate fisheries management. We and my collaborators examined the genetic inter-and intraspecific relationships of deep-sea Buccinum and Neptunea species by means of molecular markers with samples from various stations around Japan (mainly from the Sea of Japan). We found some intriguing genetic structures closely related to their characteristic reproductive mode and paleoenvironmental changes in the Sea of Japan. In addition, by comparing inter-and intraspecies relationships of some Buccinum species, I clarified some novel taxonomical aspects of these species. Here, I review these genetic structures of deep-sea whelks and describe the future direction of phylogeographical approaches to deep-sea organisms in the Sea of Japan.
