Gender-dependent and genotype-sensitive monoaminergic changes induced by polychlorinated biphenyl 153 in the rat brain

Abstract: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are present as ortho- and non-ortho-substituted PCBs, with most of the ortho-substituted congeners being neurotoxic. The present study examined effects of the ortho-substituted PCB 153 on dopamine, serotonin and amino acid neurotransmitters in the neostriatum of both male and female Wistar Kyoto (WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) genotypes. PCB 153 exposure at p8, p14 and p20 had no effects on levels of these transmitters when examined at p55, but led to increased l… Show more

“…Rodent models have revealed sex-dependent effects of developmental PCB exposure on brain neurochemistry (Dervola et al, 2015) and behavior (Bell et al, 2016;Gillette et al, 2017;Tian et al, 2011). Here, we extend these in vivo observations to demonstrate sex-dependent PCB effects on neurodevelopment in vitro.…”

“…However, looking at the same PCB (PCB 153) as Chu et al (1996b), Dervola et al (2015) studied gender-dependent monoaminergic changes induced by PCB153 in the rat brain and found changes in both the female and male brain with slightly more changes in the male brain. PCB-exposure led to increases in monoamine transmitter turnover in both male and female animals.…”

“…Experimental studies also have implicated multiple ortho-substituted PCB congeners in developmental neurotoxicity 48 . PCB153 induced neostriatal toxicity in adult WKY and SHR rats through changes in the monoaminergic but not amino acidergic neurotransmitter systems 49 . The effect of exposure of zebrafish larvae to a PCB mixture and Aroclor 1254 on neurodevelopment was also observed 50 .…”
