Abstract: Democracy is an ally of the feminist project and a necessary condition for its success. The European post-crisis context shows evidence of de-democratization processes that represent a remarkable challenge. This article investigates gender equality and processes of de-democratization in Spain in the aftermath of the 2008 economic crisis. “…While within the critical scholarship on 'gender ideology', it has been widely argued that neoliberal policy, market solutions and socioeconomic inequalities have paved the way for the authoritarian turn on which anti-gender politics itself thrives, 17 little attention has been paid to the role of corporations as key market actors, with extensive influence on political agendas and social relations. Yet, we argue, by focusing on the anti-gender critique of corporations, we can see precisely how and why 'gender' has become such a useful target for conservative and illiberal repudiations of late modern Western civilization, and better equip ourselves to address the double-bind that contemporary feminism faces.…”

“…In Spain, feminist activists fought to play a central role in the new social movements and populist left parties, which responded to the government's austerity politics (Lombardo, 2017). At the same time, populist right wing attempts in Spain and Poland to restrict abortion have sparked feminist resistance and street protests often mobilizing women in feminized occupations and solidarity movements (Alonso & Lombardo, 2018; Korolczuk, 2017). However, overall it is autonomous feminist resistance, often anti‐racist or black feminist that have engaged in the most critical and expansive critiques of austerity (Emejulu & Bassel, 2017).…”
