Thank you to my parents, Pat and Debi, who taught me I could accomplish anything I set my mind to, and to my sister, Hailey, who has always been there to playfully remind me during hard times that "my name is Kelsey Thiem, and there is no one in the world better than me." Thank you to Ross Johnson, for loving and supporting me, for enabling my stress-fueled candy addiction, and for staying up and keeping me company while I worked into the early morning hours. Thank you to Lee Budesheim, who was the first to believe in my ability to complete a Ph.D., and to Jillian O'Rourke Stuart for being a constant companion, sounding board, and source of emotional support during my time at Iowa. I'd like to thank Becca Neel for acting as my secondary advisor, even before she became my official paper advisor, and for being an excellent example of a female role model.
