Gene interaction and the A‐0 and H blood‐group systems in pigs

Abstract: A total of 1533 blood samples from adult Duroc, Yorkshire, and Duroc-Yorkshire crossbred pigs were tested for A and 0 in the A -0 system and for Ha in the H system. Results of these tests indicate that the H-system genotype influences expression of A and 0.

“…This led to the gene responsible for PSS being named the HAL gene and the marker loci near the HAL gene designated as the HAL linkage group (Juneja et al, 1983;Honjy et al, 1985;Van Zeveren et al, 1988). This linkage group consists of several erythrocyte and isoenzyme marker loci for the HAL gene and includes; H blood group system (Rasmusen and Christian, 1975); S (A-D) blood group (Rasmusen, 1954;Rasmusen, 1972); phosphohexose isomerase (PHI) (Andersen, 1970); 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD) (Rasmusen et al, 1980); and post albumin-2 (P02) (Juneja et al, 1983). Assignment of HAL and its linkage group was made to the long arm of chromosome 6 in the pig (Davies et a1., 1988 and and later confirmed by Mariani et al (1992).…”

“…Rasmusen (1964) found that pigs could be classified into 3 groups (A,0, and A-0 negative) based on serological tests. The A-0 blood group system has been termed the S gene (Rasmusen, 1964). The S allele which allows the expression of A and 0 is dominant to the recessive allele s, which does not allow expression of the A or 0 genotypes.…”

“…Some authors also found associations between blood group systems. A close linkage between systems C and J, with approximately 5.5% recombinations (Andresen 1966), and interaction of system A with a system identical or closely associated with H (Rasmussen 1972) were found.…”
