Gene Polymorphisms and Serum Levels of Pro- and Anti-Inflammatory Markers in Dengue Viral Infections

Abstract: Pro- and anti-inflammatory markers (tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α, TNF-β, interferon [IFN]-γ, interleukin [IL]-6, IL-8, IL-10, and C-reactive protein [CRP]) were investigated in 80 patients infected with dengue viruses, 100 patients presenting with febrile illness but negative for dengue, and 99 healthy subjects. Immunoenzyme methods were used for quantitative assays in the plasma. Polymorphisms of TNF-α, TNF-β, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 genes were assessed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment l… Show more

“…For type II IFNs, the serum level of IFN- γ was higher in dengue patients than in healthy individuals [ 22 ]. The same finding was also reported by Feitosa et al [ 23 ]. The serum level of IFN- γ was gradually decreased in 3–5 days, 6-7 days, 8–10 days, and 14–17 days since illness onset in both mild and severe dengue patients [ 24 ], and it was higher in severe dengue patients in 8–10 days after illness onset compared with the mild dengue patients, but no difference was found in the other times between these two groups [ 24 ].…”

“…Only 3 studies assessed both TNF-α -308 G>A and TNF-α 238 G>A [ 26 , 30 , 32 ] in the risk of severe dengue. Summary of the 11 excluded studies [ 33 – 43 ] were provided in S3 Table .…”

“…The maximum total score is 20. Studies could be divided into three grades: grade A (high quality, scored [15][16][17][18][19][20], grade B (medium quality, scored [8][9][10][11][12][13][14], and grade C (low quality, scored 0-7).…”

“…In addition, polymorphisms (rs13306435 and rs2069849) in the IL-6 gene exon have been reported to be associated with different profiles of plasma IL-6 response to immunization [18]. As polymorphisms of IL-6 and IL-10 gene may alter IL-6 and IL-10 expressions [19], we used immunohistochemistry (IHC) and RT-PCR to evaluate IL-6 and IL-10 expression levels in intervertebral disc between the LDD patients and the control subjects.…”
