Generating animated paper pop-ups from the motion of articulated characters

Abstract: Pop-up books are fascinating books comprised of paper pieces that pop out when opened to form interesting three-dimensional structures. But more than just reproducing 3D shapes, pop-up artists also use the movement of the paper pieces during the opening process to convey motion and produce some form of animation. Similarly, previous automated methods have focused on reproducing the 3D shape of an input mesh. In our work, we focus in recreating motion. We study the movement of the paper pieces of the different … Show more

“…The content in the media is well conveyed (Rusman, 2017). Pop-Up Book media also have motion elements so that the image or story is shown to be more interesting (Ruiz et al, 2015). The advantage of Pop-Up Book media was developed is gived a concrete impression in the learning process, involving students to be active while learning, so the material could remembered longer and learning becomes more meaningful (Safri et al, 2017).…”

“…In addition to single-style pop-ups, Ruiz et al [6] proposed an approach to convert a 3D model into a multi-style paper pop-up. How to use different mechanisms of paper popups to convey motion information from 3D animation has been studied in [41]. In contrast to previous works that rely on a 3D model to guide the design process, we initiate the computational pop-up design using 2D shapes.…”

“…Papercraft Generation : The computer‐assisted generation of papercrafts has been tackled before, for example for creating paper pop‐ups from 3D meshes [RJLYL14, XZM * 18] or origami architecture papercrafts [LLLN * 13], iris papercrafts [IIM16], cardboard‐based papercrafts [ZGPR16], and animated pop‐ups that show motions of articulated Characters [RLL15]. This has also been investigated for large‐scale models [SCS16, CS17] and entire 3D sceNes through developable surfaces [PDRK18].…”
