Generating circularly polarized luminescence from clusterization‐triggered emission using solid phase molecular self-assembly

Abstract: Purely-organic clusterization‐triggered emission (CTE) has displayed promising abilities in bioimaging, chemical sensing, and multicolor luminescence. However, it remains absent in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) due to the difficulties in well-aligning the nonconventional luminogens. We report a case of CPL generated with CTE using the solid phase molecular self-assembly (SPMSA) of poly-L-lysine (PLL) and oleate ion (OL), that is, the macroscopic CPL supramolecular film self-assembled by … Show more

“…Furthermore, persistent room temperature phosphorescence (p-RTP) phenomenon has been observed from many non-conjugated organic compounds, such as poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) ( Zhou et al, 2020 ), polyacrylamide (PAM) ( Wang et al, 2020 ), cyanoacetic acid ( Fang et al, 2018 ), sodium polymethacrylate (PMANa) ( Cai et al, 2019 ), and oxalic acid ( Zheng et al, 2020 ). Moreover, non-conjugated luminescent compounds have a unique excitation wavelength dependence emission property, generally RTP phenomenon and its wide application prospects in multiple anti-counterfeiting and encryption fields have become research hotspots ( Liao et al, 2021a ; Xu et al, 2021a ; Liao et al, 2021b ; Xu et al, 2021b ). However, at present, the phosphorescence ability of such compounds is weak at room temperature, and it can even be observed only in a vacuum for some compounds, for example, BSA ( Wang et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Although high-performance circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is highly desirable due to its potential applications in a wide range of chiral light-emitting transistors, optical spintronic communication, biological probes, and encryption [1][2][3][4][5][6] and in particular 3D displays. [7] There are still two major at different wavelengths.…”

“…At present, cluster induced phosphorescence (CIP), even long-lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) or afterglow, have been realized through crystal engineering [17][18][19][20] and polymerization induction. 21 However, CIP efficiency is highly dependent on the morphology of the material, requiring high crystal quality (for small molecules) 22,23 or large molecular weight (for polymers). 24,25 Therefore, it is difficult to realize the CIP of amorphous nanomaterials which have huge application potential in biological imaging, optoelectronic devices, and information storage.…”
