ABSTRACT. Canine alimentary lymphoma is currently diagnosed on the basis of findings of cytological or histopathological examination. However, it is often difficult to histopathologically distinguish alimentary lymphoma from lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis. Recently, the application of polymerase chain reaction for antigen receptor gene rearrangement (PARR) has been reported. In the present study, we assess the sensitivity of PARR analysis in diagnosing canine alimentary lymphoma using endoscopically obtained biopsy specimens from 12 dogs that were histopathologically diagnosed as having lymphoma. The sensitivity of PARR analysis in diagnosing alimentary lymphoma was found to be 66.7%, which was lower than that of other lymphoid malignancies. A combination of histipathological examination and findings of PARR analysis may improve the diagnostic accuracy.KEY WORDS: cancer diagnosis, canine, gastro-intestinal disease, lymphoma/leukemia, PCR.

ABSTRACT:A four-year-old Bullmastiff weighing 44 kg was presented with a 14-day history of weight loss, vomiting and diarrhoea. Abdominal ultrasonography showed the presence of abdominal lymphadenopathy and thickening of the wall of the descending colon. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy with biopsy were performed. Histological examination revealed a high-grade lymphoblastic lymphoma, flow cytometric analysis detected malignant cells of the immature B phenotype. PCR for antigen receptor rearrangement confirmed IgH monoclonality pointing together with immunophenotyping to B-cell lymphoma. The dog was treated using a multi-agent chemotherapy protocol. The overall survival time was 487 days.
