Genetic Divergence, Character Correlations and Heritability Study in 22 (Arachis hypogaea L.) Accessions of Groundnut

Abstract: Twenty two groundnut genotypes collected from International Crops Research Institute for Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and local sources (Samaru, UNILORIN and UNAAB) were cultivated in Lagos (60º 36'N, 30º 34'E) and Abeokuta (70º 10'N, 30º 20'E) during 2010 planting seasons, to determine the genetic variability and performance of the genotypes. Data collected on ten (10) characters and yield was subjected to multivariate analysis to determine genetic divergence among the genotypes. Number of pods per plant showe… Show more

“…The analysis of variance revealed considerable genetic variability among the genotypes for most of the traits under study. The findings support previous observations [ 26 , 27 ] that there is a considerable variability in yield component and oil quality in groundnut. Moreover, the F 2 population used in this study exhibited a wider range variation of phenotypic variation due to segregation and recombination, attributable to genetic variation.…”

“…(2014) that abundant genetic divergence existed in fluted pumpkin germplasm. According to Makinde and Ariyo [16], "the pattern of genetic variation observed would be of great importance to germplasm collectors and plant breeders". "The categorization of the diversity among the genotypes into groups with similar characteristics can be used to design a collection strategy" [17,16].…”

“…Multivariate analysis is a popular method for estimating genetic variability to study the components of variation and their genetic relationships between germplasm collections (Syafii et al, 2015;Rahal-Bouziane et al, 2015). Multivariate analyses have been used in many studies on groundnuts (Makinde et al, 2013). Selection effectiveness depends on the extent of genetic variability present in the available germplasm for the trait of interest and its heritability value (Garba et al, 2015).…”
