Genetic Diversity and Population Genetics of Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae: Culex spp.) from the Sonoran Desert of North America

Abstract: The population genetics and phylogenetic relationships of Culex mosquitoes inhabiting the Sonoran Desert region of North America were studied using mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite molecular markers. Phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) from mosquitoes collected over a wide geographic area, including the Baja California peninsula, and mainland localities in southern Arizona, USA and Sonora, Mexico, showed several well-supported partitions corresponding to Cx. quinquef… Show more

“…S2 Table shows the posterior distribution of parameters for Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) analysis using the DIYABC software [46]. The estimated mutation rate under the best-fit scenario was 9.5x10 -6 , and falls within the range of microsatellite mutation rates estimated for other Diptera [50,51]. …”

“…; Pfeiler et al . ). The time estimated for the founding of Asian populations assuming an average of 10 generations per year is 1280–1770 generations or ~150 years ago (Table S1, Supporting information), setting priors for leaving Africa at 4500–6000 generations ago (~500 years ago) in agreement with historical records, suggesting the New World populations were founded by trade between the New World and Old World in the 15th and 16th centuries.…”

“…These species are part of the Cx. pipiens complex, which is known to be difficult to distinguish using standard barcoding methods (Laurito et al 2013; Pfeiler et al 2013; Batovska et al 2016). In comparison to COI as a marker in the same specimens/species (Batovska et al 2016), ITS2 has similar resolution, with both markers successfully distinguishing all species with the exception of the Cx.…”
