Genetic diversity and population structure ofSynthesium pontoporiae(Digenea, Brachycladiidae) linked to its definitive host stocks, the endangered Franciscana dolphin,Pontoporia blainvillei(Pontoporiidae) off the coast of Brazil and Argentina

Abstract: Pontoporia blainvillei (Gervais and d'Orbigny, 1844) is an endangered small cetacean endemic to South America with four Franciscana Management Areas (FMA) recognized as different population stocks. The role of the intestinal parasite Synthesium pontoporiae (Digenea: Brachycladiidae) as a possible biological marker to differentiate P. blainvillei stocks was evaluated using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA markers. Internal transcribed sequence 1 and 2 (ITS1 and ITS2) regions of S. pontoporiae did not show intraspe… Show more

“…As far as we are aware, there is a single study that has investigated the phylogeography and genetic structure of a digenean from cetaceans. Marigo et al [16] described the genetic structure of Synthesium pontoporiae , which is specific to the Franciscana dolphin, Pontoporia blainvillei . This largely sedentary cetacean has a relatively restricted geographic range occurring along the temperate coasts of southern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.…”

“…The cytochromo oxidase subunit I (COI) is part of a complex gene encoding of transmembrane proteins, involved in the electrical transport and catalysis of the respiratory chain of eukaryotic organisms and has been the subject respiratoria de organismos eucariotas y ha sido motivo de estudios poblacionales de variabilidad genética por su universalidad e importancia evolutiva (9). El ADNmt presenta características como su herencia matrilineal, es haploide, presenta una alta tasa de evolución y contiene regiones conservadas y variables, que lo han convertido en una herramienta utilizada en varios estudios (10)(11)(12). Por lo anterior, el propósito de la presente investigación fue utilizar el COI como marcador molecular para estimar la diversidad genética en cinco islas de manglar en Tumaco, Colombia.…”

“…of population genetic variability studies due to its universality and evolutionary importance (9). The mtDNA has characteristics such as its matrilineal inheritance, it is haploid, has a high rate of evolution and includes conserved and variable regions, which has made it a tool used in several studies (10)(11)(12). Therefore, the purpose of this research was to use COI as molecular marker to estimate genetic diversity in five mangrove islands in Tumaco, Colombia.…”

“…The molecular data affi rmed that samples of B. atlanticum were conspecifi c in spite of host species. Marigo et al (2013) genetically distinguished the host cetacean species (Pontoporia blainvillei) infected by Synthesium pontoporiae from Brazil and Argentina using ITS-1, ITS-2 rDNA and mitochondrial ND3 and COI gene sequences. Any intra-specifi c differences were not observed among ITS-1 and ITS-2 reigon of S. pontoporiae.…”
