Genetic diversity and population structure of Indonesian native chickens based on single nucleotide polymorphism markers

Abstract: Indonesian native chickens are considered an important genetic resource, particularly with respect to their excellent traits for meat and egg production. However, few molecular genetic studies of these native chickens have been conducted. We analyzed the genetic diversity and differentiation of 4 populations of Indonesian native chickens: Black Kedu (BK), Kedu (KD), Kampung (LOC), and Arab (AR). Blood samples from 188 individuals were collected in central and western Java. Genomic DNA was genotyped using 98 au… Show more

“…Local Indonesian chickens have special phenotypical characteristics; therefore, specific phenotypical character identification is required to as certain the genetic diversity of the local chicken population and for the development of a germplasm. Riztyan et al (2011) states that local chickens in Indonesia are kept in small groups has the distinction of a low character.…”

“…These studies contain both commercial and native chicken populations and use markers such as mtDNA, AFLP, RAPD, Microsatellite and SNP (Sharma et al, 2001; International Chicken Polymorphism Map Consortium, Shahbazi et al, 2007;Gongora et al, 2009;Riztyan et al, 2011;Storey et al 2012). …”

“…The genotype data from these samples was combined with our previous subset of data from domestic chickens (Riztyan et al, 2011(Riztyan et al, , 2012, which was composed of two groups, native chickens and commercial breeds of chickens. Genomic DNA was purified from these samples using the proteinase K and phenol-chloroform method (Sambrook et al, 1989).…”
