Objectives Individualized treatment for bipolar disorder based on neuroimaging treatment targets remains elusive. To address this shortcoming, we developed a linguistic machine learning system based on a cascading Genetic Fuzzy Tree (GFT) design called the LITHium Intelligent Agent (LITHIA). Using multiple objectively defined fMRI and proton MRS (1H-MRS) inputs, we tested whether LITHIA could accurately predict lithium response in participants with first-episode bipolar mania. Methods We identified 20 subjects with first-episode bipolar mania who received an adequate trial of lithium over eight weeks and both fMRI and 1H-MRS scans at baseline pre-treatment. We trained LITHIA using 18 1H-MRS and 90 fMRI inputs over four training runs to classify treatment response and predict symptom reductions. Each training run contained a randomly selected 80% of the total sample and was followed by a 20% validation run. Over a different randomly selected distribution of the sample, we then compared LITHIA to eight common classification methods. Results LITHIA demonstrated nearly perfect classification accuracy and was able to predict post-treatment symptom reductions at 8 weeks with at least 88% accuracy in training and 80% accuracy in validation. Moreover, LITHIA exceeded the predictive capacity of the eight comparator methods and showed little tendency towards overfitting. Conclusions Results provide proof-of-concept that a novel GFT is capable of providing control to a multidimensional bioinformatics problem – namely prediction of lithium response – in a pilot data set. Future work on this, and similar machine learning systems, could help assign psychiatric treatments more efficiently, thereby optimizing outcomes and limiting unnecessary treatment.

Abstract. Recent technological advances make the prospect of partially or fully autonomous combat machines remaking the battlefields of the next decade very likely. The paper explores the space of possible reactions to such developments by the international community. We discuss three such families of approaches -an attempt at a comprehensive global ban; strict control regimeemployment and strict regulation of Autonomous Military Robots by present-day global military powers coupled with vigorous non-proliferation efforts aimed at other countries and entities, akin to the management of nuclear weapons dynamic; and the laissez faire approach, i.e., exerting no effort to thwart the global proliferation of combat robots, whether military-grade or home-made, with all the consequences of such inaction. We conclude that while all these modes of reaction are burdened with very significant risks, vigorous action combining the elements of the global ban and control regime approaches is morally obligatory yet requires large conceptual effort to be undertaken on its behalf to be sufficiently effective.Keywords: technical development, autonomous battle machines, Autonomous Military Robots AUTONOMICZNE ROBOTY BOJOWE: MOŻLIWE REAKCJE NA NADCHODZĄCĄ REWOLUCJĘ TECHNICZNĄ Streszczenie. W artykule zajęto się zakresem możliwych reakcji społeczności międzynarodowej na takie kierunki rozwoju. Omówiono trzy podejścia: próbę całkowitego zakazu, przyjęcie ścisłej kontroli (zastosowanie ścisłych regulacji w kwestii autonomicznych robotów bojowych przez obecne potęgi militarne wraz z przyjęciem polityki przeciwdziałania rozprzestrzenianiu, podobne do postępowania z bronią nuklearną) i podejście liberalistyczne, tj. niepodejmowa-202 M. Zając, W.J. Bober nie żadnych wysiłków w celu ograniczenia rozprzestrzeniania robotów bojowych, zarówno przez armie czy inne organizacje, ze wszystkimi konsekwencjami takiego zaniechania. Dochodzimy do wniosku, że jakkolwiek wszystkie te rodzaje reakcji obarczone są znacznym ryzykiem, moralnie pożądane jest podejście łączące elementy całkowitego zakazu ze ścisłą kontrolą, chociaż tutaj osiągnięcie sukcesu wymagałoby podjęcia zaawansowanych, skutecznych wysiłków badawczych.

This article investigates the problem of designing a novel maneuvering decision-making method for the unmanned combat aerial vehicle. The design objective is to promote the real-time ability of decision-making method and solve the problem of uncertainty caused by incomplete target information. On the basis of statistics theory, a robust maneuvering decision method with self-adaptive target intention prediction is proposed. The robustness design is embedded in the membership function of the situation parameters. The reachable set theory and adaptive adjustment mechanism of the target state weight are used in the target intention prediction to promote the real-time ability. Simulations are conducted under the condition that the enemy aircraft perform both non-maneuvering and combat maneuvering. The results verify the good properties of the decision-making method, which can extend the survival time of the unmanned combat aerial vehicle when the enemy aircraft attacks, and short the taking position and attack time of the unmanned combat aerial vehicle when the enemy aircraft evades.
