Genetic mapping with testcrossing associations and F2:3 populations reveals the importance of heterosis in chilling tolerance at maize seedling stage

Abstract: Maize seedlings are sensitive to low temperatures, and genetic mapping for chilling tolerance at the seedling stage with genetically diverse populations would facilitate the genetic improvement of this important trait. In this study, quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping for four chilling tolerancerelated traits at the seedling stage was conducted via a genome-wide association study (GWAS) with 338 testcrosses. A total of 32 significant loci and 36 stress tolerance-related candidate genes were identified, thou… Show more

In addition, some of them [ GRMZM2G105571 ( Li et al, 2018 ), GRMZM2G167856 ( Li et al, 2016 ), GRMZM2G171373 ( Aguilera-Alvarado et al, 2019 ), CKX10 ( Smehilova et al, 2009 ), GRMZM2G128644 ( Song et al, 2016 ), GRMZM2G314064 ( Jiang et al, 2012 ), GRMZM2G407825 ( Yan et al, 2017 ), etc.] had been reported by previous studies of maize seed and leaf, which was consistent with our study.…”

“…This example demonstrates the use of the Regions Search Tool to identify and save a list of genes located within 50 kb of SNPs found to be associated with the trait "water content of shoots and leaves" (Yan et al, 2017) and how to perform GO and pathway enrichment analyses. The steps for this example are illustrated in Figure 6 and Supplementary Figures 7-10.…”

“…These results show that DMC might be more valuable in breeding compared to FW and DW as it allows more sensitivity in discrimination of tolerant and sensitive genotypes to WW. Notably, DMC is calculated only from these two parameters (FW and DW), but it is an inverse to the current water content of plant shoot [14,22]. In field environments, lower heritability values are expected with higher divergence in reactions due to the large number of uncontrolled conditions occurring throughout the growing period.…”
