Genetic parameters for earnings in Quarter Horse

Abstract: ABSTRACT. In this study, we estimated the heritability (h 2 ) of earnings in the Quarter Horse in order to evaluate the inclusion of this trait in breeding programs. Records from 14,754 races of 2443 horses from 1978-2009 were provided by Sorocaba Hippodrome, São Paulo, Brazil. All ancestors of the registered horses were included in the pedigree file until the 4th generation. Log-transformed performance measures (LPM) were analyzed for animals aged 2, 3, and 4 years and during their entire career. The h 2 esti… Show more

“…A higher percentage of females in the races has also been described for Thoroughbreds (Mota et al, 1998;Mota et al, 2005) and Arabian horses (Ekiz and Kocak, 2005), as well as for the QH breed (Buttram et al, 1988;Corrêa e Mota, 2007;Silva et al, 2014). A smaller number of males with race records is not the result of a smaller number of births but is rather due to the fact that not all males born are registered and perform racing activities.…”

“…Earnings represent the sum of monetary prizes earned by a horse over its lifetime career or at a specific age or period. In the present study, considering that 74.9% of the horses participated in their first race at 2 years of equestrian age and following the recommendations by Silva et al [5], earnings at 2 years of equestrian age (E2) was defined as the trait. The prize money won at 2 years of equestrian age was obtained at different times (from 1978 to 2015) and in different Brazilian currencies [12].…”

“…The prize money won at 2 years of equestrian age was obtained at different times (from 1978 to 2015) and in different Brazilian currencies [12]. The values obtained [5] were then converted to international currency (USD), and the monetary update was obtained for June 2019 [13]. Since the phenotypic values of E2 showed no normal distribution, log10 transformation was applied [14].…”

“…In the case of other livestock, many studies have been conducted on best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) [12][13][14], but on racehorses, studies are limited due to perceived difficulty in generation, quantification, and analysis of data. However, a previous study determined a model by combining explanatory variables that affect the racing performance to assess the potential of development of Thoroughbred racehorse breeding based on KRA horse race data [2,15,16]. This study constructed a simple animal model of a combined performance index with these normalized variables for Korean racehorse breeding.…”
