Genetic polymorphism in IGF-1 gene in four sheep and goat breeds and its association with biometrical traits in migratory Gaddi goat breed of western Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh, India

Abstract: Sheep and goat production is a predominant livestock activity in harsh climatic regions of the country particularly in hilly areas. The goat and sheep population in Himachal Pradesh is 1.12 and 0.81 million respectively. Gaddi and Rampur-Bushair are the two indigenous sheep breeds of the state well adapted to the prevalent migratory production system. The somatotrophic axis (GH/IGF-I axis) is considered as the key in postnatal growth and metabolism in different mammals including farm animals. The technique of … Show more

“…This is in line with the study conducted by Nazari et al (2016), using a rural local sheep breed on Locus IGF-1 in Zandi, which showed the population was not in Hardy -Weinberg equilibrium (p<0.01). Similarly, Sankhyan et al (2020) stated Locus IGF-1 in the Himachal Pradesh sheep, and goat breeds deviated significantly from the expected ratio. DNA sequencing is used to determine genes or different DNA fragments' identification and characteristics by comparing the series with different sequences (Wong et al, 2019).…”

“…The association of IGF-I gene polymorphism with economic traits in the 5'-flanking region with body weight, has also been described by Moody et al (1996), Li et al (2004), Moradian et al (2013) and Darwish et al (2017). No association of IGF-1 polymorphism with production traits was reported by Curi et al (2005) in cattle, Wu-Jan et al (2010) in cashmere goats, Rasouli et al, (2017) in Markhoz goats and Sankhyan et al, (2019) in Gaddi goat. The differences in between breeds and their habitat may be responsible for presence or absence of polymorphism and their association with growth traits.…”

“…On the other side, genetic differentiation of this gene in livestock species including sheep was under investigation (Liu et al 2012;Saleh et al 2019;Sankhyan et al 2019;Sarmah et al 2019;Splaine et al 2019). Li et al (2008) reported three genotypes of IGFBP-3 among seven populations of goats with significantly high association with weaning weight, body length, rib eye area, heart girth, and body length.…”
