Genetic Polymorphisms in the Kuwaiti Arabs

Abstract: Blood samples were collected from 162 Kuwaiti Arabs. These samples were typed for the ABO, MNSs, Rh, Kell and Duffy blood group systems, serum protein haptoglobins, the red cell isoenzymes acid phosphatase, phosphoglucomutase (locus 1), adenylate kinase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, and the lactate and malate dehydrogenase variants. Comparisons were made with serological findings for other Arab populations in the Arabian peninsula.

“…This confirms our earlier ob servations of a very low Tf°1 in Jordan [Banerjee et al, 1981]. Sawhney et al [1984] reported a complete lack of T f°] in Kuwaiti Arabs. The frequencies of TjCl and TfC2 were found to be 0.721 and 0.275 among the Bedouins and 0.771 and 0.225 in non-Bedouins of Jordan.…”

“…The low frequency of R0 in the present populations suggests a low degree of African admix ture. The frequencies of Rh alleles in the present populations of Jordan are similar to those in Saudi Arabs [Maranjian et al, 1966;Saha et al, 1980] and Kuwaiti Arabs [Sawhney et al, 1984],…”

“…A still lower frequency of Hp' was observed in Ethiopians (0.38: Harrison et al, 1969), North Sinai inhabitants (0.296-0.345: Hamza et al, 1976), Egyptian oases (0.3245: Selim et al, 1974), and Lybians (0.4211-0.4285: Kame1 et al, 1975). A lower frequency of Hp' has also been reported in Kuwaiti and Jordanian Arabs (0.2924: Banerjee et al, 1981;Saha and Banerjee, 1986;Sawhney et al, 1984). Thus the frequency of Hp' in the Sudanese tribes appears to be intermediate between that in Arabs and negroids.…”

“…Of interest are the biological distinctions between the "mountain" groups and the "plain/desert" groups. Furthermore, within this latter These facts, which are supported by historical sources (Seligman, 1917;Van Beek, 1970;Richard, 1984) (Mourant, 1954;Maranjian et al, 1966;Mourant e Tills, 1967;Marengo Rowe et al, 1974;Tills et al, 1977;Saha et al, 1980;Sawhney et al, 1984). The results of these traditional genetical analyses have also recently been confirmed by studies on DNA markers.…”
