Genetic variability and differentiation in Spanish roe deer (Capreolus capreolus): A phylogeographic reassessment within the European framework☆

Abstract: Here we study 109 Iberian roe deer individuals corresponding to 9 Spanish populations. Individuals were sampled at locations that are expected to have acted as refugia for the species during the 20th century. Samples were analyzed for a 436 bp mtDNA fragment from the HVI region of mitochondrial DNA and 10 microsatellites. The 109 sequences gave 31 different haplotypes that enabled identification of a new haplogroup (mainly present in Northwestern Iberian populations and representing roughly a third of our samp… Show more

“…In addition to these divisions, significant internal structuring has been detected in roe sampled from the Italian and Iberian peninsulas. This supports the existence of a subspecies in central-southern Italy (C. c. italicus) (Lorenzini et al, 2002;Randi et al, 2004) and an additional Celtic-Iberian group in centralsouthern Spain (Royo et al, 2007). Taken together, these data likely reflect the existence of several glacial refugia .…”

“…2) it seems clear that there are two main groups corresponding to the two main regions described in [29]. The left cluster {1, 5, 7, 9, 2, 6} corresponds to Northwestern populations (with a further subdivision including the Pyrenean populations: 2 and 6), while the right cluster {3, 4, 8} is formed by CentralSouthern populations.…”

“…En la Península Ibérica existen dos poblaciones de corzo Capreolus capreolus (Linnaeus, 1758) gené-ticamente diferenciadas (Lorenzini et al 2003, Royo et al 2007) y geográficamente bien localizadas. La población de corzos más abundante y más ampliamente distribuida es la que habita la mitad central y norte peninsular.…”
