Genetic variability and nitrogen response indices in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivars under contrasting nitrogen environments

Abstract: Although common bean plants can fix atmospheric nitrogen (N2), this process is insufficient to meet the total nitrogen (N) demand of the crop. Thus, the objective of the present study was to compare different N‐responses indices of common bean cultivars in contrasting N fertilization environments. In addition, the genetic variability of the cultivars was verified using SNP and AFLP markers. Cultivars that showed high tolerance to low‐N (LNTI) generally had low N‐agronomic efficiency (NAE), confirming the compl… Show more

“…The main abiotic factors limiting bean growth and productivity are drought (Androcioli et al., 2020; Arruda et al., 2019), high temperatures (Chavez‐Arias et al., 2018), aluminum toxicity (Santos Neto et al., 2020), and soils with low phosphorus (Tembo et al., 2019) and nitrogen (N) contents (Zeffa et al., 2020; Zeffa, Moda‐Cirino, Delfini, et al., 2021; Zeffa, Moda‐Cirino, Nogueira, et al., 2021). Although beans can fix atmospheric‐N (N 2 ) in symbiosis with bacteria of the genus Rhizobium , the fixation is less efficient than that of other legumes (Appelbaum, 2018).…”

“…In addition to cultivars' adaptability and stability Zeffa et al, 2021), the management practices may favor or limit the plant's genetic potential due to factors such as nutrient use efficiency (Leal et al, 2019;Zeffa et al, 2020;2021) and water use efficiency (Fatumah et al, 2021).…”
