Genomic Analyses of Cherry Rusty Mottle Group and Cherry Twisted Leaf-Associated Viruses Reveal a Possible New Genus Within the Family Betaflexiviridae

Abstract: It is demonstrated that closely related viruses within the family Betaflexiviridae are associated with a number of diseases that affect sweet cherry (Prunus avium) and other Prunus spp. Cherry rusty mottle-associated virus (CRMaV) is correlated with the appearance of cherry rusty mottle disease (CRMD), and Cherry twisted leaf-associated virus (CTLaV) is linked to cherry twisted leaf disease (CTLD) and apricot ringpox disease (ARPD). Comprehensive analysis of previously reported full genomic sequences plus thos… Show more

“…Despite the frequent presence of multiple infectious agents in naturally infected trees, a correlation seems established between the presence of CTLaV and cherry twisted leaf or apricot ringpox diseases symptoms (Villamor et al, 2015) Yes Shorter internodes, stunting and fruit abnormalities are also associated with the virus infections.…”

“…Recently described virus (Villamor et al, 2015). Twenty-two non-EU viruses of Prunus (APLPV, AVCaV, APV-1, APV-2, APV-3, CPrV, CMLV, CRV, CRMaV, CTLaV, CVB, MuVA, NSPaV, NeVM, PcMV, PEV, PLPaV, PeCMV, PeVD, PrGVA, PrVF, PrVT) have not been reported from natural hosts other than Prunus, although some of them can infect some or many experimental herbaceous hosts.…”

“…2.). CRMaV-SC is clearly most closely related to isolates of CRMaV (in particular 8804) and therefore should be included in the genus Robigovirus (Villamor et al 2015) of the family Betaflexiviridae, subfamily Quinvirinae (ICTV 2016). A comparison of the percentage identity of the putative amino acid sequences of the open reading frames (ORF) of CRMVa-SC as compared to the corresponding ORFs of other Robigoviruses is shown in Table 1.…”

“…Cherry necrotic rusty mottle (CNRMV) and Cherry green ring mottle virus (CGRMV) are two species belonging to the newly established genus Robigovirus within the family Betaflexiviridae of ssRNA plant viruses (Villamor et al 2015;ICTV 2016). Both viruses are filamentous with the positive-sense RNA genome ranging from 8.3 kB to 8.9 kB in length and composed of 7 ORFs.…”
