Abstract: Photosymbiosis is fundamental driving force for ecological success of benthic coral reef ecosystems, and contributing to their biodiversity and resilience. As a benchmark organism indicative of reef health, the fluted giant clam (Tridacna squamosa) forms an exemplary photosymbiotic relationship with the symbiont Symbiodiniaceae dinoflagellates, whose initiation and maturation require finely coordinated interactions.
