Genotype-by-Diet Interactions for Larval Performance and Body Composition Traits in the Black Soldier Fly, Hermetia illucens

Abstract: Further advancing black soldier fly (BSF) farming for waste valorisation and more sustainable global protein supplies critically depends on targeted exploitation of genotype-phenotype associations in this insect, comparable to conventional livestock. This study used a fully crossed factorial design of rearing larvae of four genetically distinct BSF strains (FST: 0.11–0.35) on three nutritionally different diets (poultry feed, food waste, poultry manure) to investigate genotype-by-environment interactions. Phen… Show more

“…A second example is the BSFL weight at harvest: from 63 to 156 mg fresh weight and 17 to 51 mg on a dry weigh basis, indicating a factor 2.5 to 3 for this parameter. Plausible explanations for this variation could be differences in laboratories environment, variation in plasticity responses to new diet, survival, as well as differences in the genetic background (Kaya et al, 2021;Khamis et al, 2020;Sandrock et al, 2022).…”

“…Another key parameter is the BSFL genotype used, since the BSF’s genetic background is known to impact BSFL performance, and perhaps the effect of specific probiotics as well [ 28 , 58 ]. The so-called Wuhan strain has been used most frequently in the studies presented in Table 1 [ 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 42 , 46 ].…”

“…However, especially in the European Union and Switzerland, their production is only permitted when feed grade substrates are used (EU 2021/1372). Tis practice may not be sustainable, as it places BSF feed in direct competition with feed for other livestock [14].…”
