Geo-localization System for People with Cognitive Disabilities

Abstract: Abstract. Technology is present in almost every simple aspect of the people's daily life. As an instance, let us refer to the smartphone. This device is usually equipped with a GPS module which may be used as an orientation system, if it carries the right functionalities. The problem is that these applications may be complex to operate and may not be within the bounds of everybody. Therefore, the main goal here is to develop an orientation system that may help people with cognitive disabilities in their day-to-… Show more

“…The name of our system is CogHelper and it helps people with cognitive disabilities and their caregivers [17]. This system is intended to work outdoors, and its structure ( The server is the core of the system, since all the other services are connected to it, namely in terms of a database (to store all the data needed to its correct operation, like usernames, locations, points of interest), and a communication module to connect to other internal services, as well as to external ones.…”

“…In terms of guidance systems there are two types of spaces: indoor and outdoor. In the case of indoor systems, an augmented reality guidance system is presented in [ 51 ], which promotes mobility and allows people with cognitive problems to be located in real-time. It uses a smartphone with a camera and presents the user with a direct video feed having overlapping direction arrows to indicate the route.…”

“…In [12] we presented a functional prototype that works as an orientation and a localization system. The user is guided through an application for Android Operative System using augmented reality, being also given to the caregivers the possibility to know the current user position in real time.…”

“…Considering the lack of spatial orientation of the user (previously described), it was developed a system (described in [12]) that guides the user among different locations using simple interfaces, enabling the caregiver to know his/her current location, which increases either the freedom of the user or the caregiver. The former may travel alone while the latter may be engaged in another work without neglect the care provision.…”
