This paper systematically surveyed distribution and field occurrences of 13 hot springs as well as geochemical investigation on the geothermal area of the Tatun Volcano Group (TVG). According to Piper diagrams, pH values, field occurrences and water-rock interactions, these hot springs can be classified into three types: (1) Type I, SO 4 2-acidic water where the reservoir is located in the Wuchishan Formation; (2) Type II, HCO 3 -a near neutral spring where waters originate from the volcanic terrane (andesite); and (3) Type III, Cl --rich acidic water where waters emanate from shallower Wuchishan Formation. In terms of isotopic ratio, δD and δ 18O values, two groups of hot spring can be recognized. One is far away from the meteoric water line of the Tatun area with values ranging between -26.2‰ and -3.5‰, and from -3.2‰ to 1.6‰, respectively. However, another close to the meteoric water line of the Tatun area is between -28.4‰ and -13.6‰, and from -5.5‰ to -4.2‰, respectively. In addition, the δ 34 S value of thermal waters can also be distinguished into two groups, one ranging from 26.1‰ to 28.5‰, and the other between 0.8‰ and 7.8‰. Based on field occurrences and geochemical characteristics, a model has been proposed to illustrate the origin of these hot springs.

We have investigated the stratigraphy of the youngest volcaniclastic deposits, as well as the morphology of lava flows and domes of the TVG in order to reconstruct the character and timing of the most recent eruptions and related hazardous events in the area. Our data indicate that recent eruptions of the group were dominated by long-term, voluminous extrusions of crystal-rich, very viscous lavas. These eruptions formed closely spaced monogenetic domes and lava flows. Based on morphological parameters of the lava flows (thicknesses 80-150 m, lengths up to 5.6 km, and volumes up to 0.6 km 3 ), average rates of magma effusion ranged from 1 to 10 m 3 /s, eruption durations from 500 to 1800 days, and lava front speeds from 0.5 to 6 m/h. Explosive activity of TVG was diverse, ranging from weak phreatic to highly explosive (VEI 4) Plinian eruptions; vulcanian activity with deposition of lithic ashes was most common. Interaction of rising magma with ground water frequently occurred during the eruptions. This study presents the first radiocarbon dates of various volcaniclastic deposits of the TVG, which indicate that Cising, Siaoguanyin, and possibly Huangzuei volcanoes had magmatic eruptions in the period 13,000-23,000 years ago. In addition, Mt. Cising had a phreatic eruption 6000 years ago, and possibly an effusive eruption just before that. Gravitational collapses of volcanic edifices with volumes 0.01-0.1 km 3 and H/L 0.16-0.25 were also common. They occurred on intersections with tectonic faults and may have been triggered by seismic activity. The youngest collapses occurred at Mt. Siaoguanyin (23,000 BP) and Mt. Cising (6000 BP). It is concluded that the TVG should be considered volcanically active. The results of this study provide a basis for volcanic hazard assessment and mitigation in the area.

The geochemical characteristics of mantle xenoliths (spinel lherzolites) in Quaternary alkaline basalts from the northwestern Ethiopian plateau provide new insight into the conditions of melting associated with the Afar plume. The major element compositions of the spinel lherzolites are in the range of those of the primitive mantle. The high modal content of the clinopyroxene (14-23%) indicate that the mantle xenoliths are fertile spinel lherzolites that have experienced insignificant partial melting. However, enrichment in highly incompatible elements (LREE, Ba, Pb, Th, and U) and the absence of any typical metasomatic minerals indicate that the spinel lherzolites underwent an event of later cryptic metasomatic enrichment induced by plume-related, hydrous fluid-rich silicate melts.
