Background: Malocclusion can affect oral hygiene through several circumstances, one of which is the attachment of debris and calculus due to difficulties in tooth brushing. Debris will be inaccessible and attached to the interdental part of the teeth which causes the accumulation of plaque as well as calculus. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to analyze about correlation between the severity level of malocclusion with the OHI-S status in students at SMPN 1 Marabahan. Material and Methods: This research is an observational analytic study using cross sectional approach. The sample size in this research was 46 samples of SMPN 1 Marabahan student. Data collection was performed using IOTN-DHC and OHI-S. Data analysis consisted of univariate analysis which described the character from each variable and bivariate analysis which connected two variables with spearman test. Results: The severity level of malocclusion at SMPN 1 Marabahan based on the highest IOTN-DHC was in the great need for orthodontic treatment category comprising of 19 respondents (41.30%). The oral hygiene status based on the highest OHI-S was in the category of poor with a total of 24 respondents (52.17%). Conclusion: There is a correlation between the severity level of malocclusion and oral hygiene. Higher severity level of malocclusion will affect oral hygiene status.Keywords: Adolescent, IOTN-DHC, Malocclusion, OHI-S, Oral hygiene.

ObjectivesTo estimate the pooled prevalence estimates of the malocclusion among child and adolescent population of India.ContentsA comprehensive electronic search was carried to find studies related to assessing malocclusion in Indian children and adolescent population. Indices and classifications considered for pooled analysis were Dental Aesthetic Index, Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needs, Angles classification and terminal plane relationship of primary secondary molars. An eligibility criterion was prepared and quality assessment was done for all the eligible studies. Initial search produced 1090 titles. After removal of duplicates, 850 records were left for further screening. Eighty one articles were found eligible for full text reading. Finally 60 studies were included in this meta-analysis. Pooled prevalence was used to estimate overall effect, with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Statistical difference between the two genders was calculated using chi square test.Summary and outlookThe high prevalence of malocclusion is a public health problem around the world. The current status of burden of malocclusion among Indian children and adolescents is not known. Results of this pooled analysis showed that prevalence of malocclusion among Indian children and adolescents has increased since the last national oral health survey. Prevalence of malocclusion ranged from 28.4% (CI 25.02, 31.9) to 66.7% (CI 50.7, 81.06) depending on the type of index or classification used for recording. Boys recorded higher cumulative prevalence than girls. These findings can be utilized by oral health policy makers to draft measures required for reducing this burden of malocclusion.

The spatial variations affecting oral health can be determined by using the evolving technology, Geographical Information System (GIS). The present article aims to review various GIS applications in dental public health and to critically examine the strengths, limitations and challenges of utilising GIS in dental public health. GIS has helped in many areas like spatial patterning of dental services, effects of interventions and contextual level influences on oral health. Still, there are few limitations with GIS like limited availability of spatial data, highly dependent on the amount and quality of data for different regions, wide variation of GIS software applications, cost of software, hardware and training. The strategic opportunities for its use should be maximized for the mutual benefit of researchers, practitioners, decision makers, and our communities.
