Geographic relevance in mobile services

Abstract: In this position paper we describe the concept of geographic relevance and its potential for mobile location-based services employing the mobile Internet. We argue that existing LBS have a too limited concept of location and its application for filtering geographic content. We propose an approach for geographic relevance that extends LBS and location-aware web applications and aims at better supporting mobile users' decision-making based on geographic information. After a short description of an ongoing projec… Show more

“…It is well known how those two factors also influence the user's activity (Raubal et al 2004). It is also well known that the user's activity influences the user's mobility (Miller and Bridwell 2009) and the relevance of the geographic entities (Reichenbacher 2009). Thus, a topic to be further investigated is if (and how) the relevance of the geographic entities influences the user's mobility and activity, and then, how the assessment of GR can modify and improve our understanding of personal mobility, activities, and their relations to each other.…”

“…Since navigation differs according to context, considerations of relevance have also been considered in distinct ways. Within GIScience, relevance has been discussed by Purves and Jones [22] in the context of geographic information retrieval, Raper [2] in the context of information needs, and Reichenbacher [23] with regard to mobile services.…”

“…Ponte and Croft [138] introduce language models for IR. The notion of geographical variable is also discussed by Reichenbacher [144]; Reichenbacher and De Sabbata [145]. The paper written by Shannon [155] is the reference for entropy.…”
