Geographic Representativeness of a Web-Based Smoking Cessation Intervention: Reach Equity Analysis

Abstract: BackgroundCigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. Smoking prevalence is higher in rural areas than in metropolitan areas, due partly to differences in access to cessation treatment. With internet use at 89% of all US adults, digital approaches could increase use of cessation treatment and reduce smoking.ObjectiveWe investigated the extent to which smokers from rural areas use a digital cessation resource. We compared the geographic distribution of registere… Show more

“…For policies to have an impact on subgroups most affected by FTP use, policy analyses should examine the extent to which these policies equitably reach these populations, termed “reach equity.” The purpose of this study is to (1) describe variation in current FTP policies in the United States and (2) estimate the potential reach equity of any and strong FTP policies to vulnerable subgroups using the reach ratio (ReRa), a measure used previously to estimate reach equity of cessation interventions at the population level (Amato & Graham, 2018; Campbell, Baskerville, Hayward, Brown, & Ossip, 2013).…”

“…Other jurisdictions like Chicago and San Francisco restrict the sale of all types of FTPs. However, Chicago's ordinance is geographically limited to only apply to retail stores within 500 feet of high schools, while San Francisco's ban is both comprehensive of all tobacco products, flavor types and applies to all retailers throughout the jurisdiction (Bach, 2019).…”

“…Although previous research has examined reach ratios of tobacco control interventions in young adults, 8 rural populations, 9 and other vulnerable groups, 10 no studies to date have examined the extent to which quitlines are reaching menthol smokers. To gain a better understanding of menthol smoker enrollment, data from Minnesota's QUITPLAN Services (hereafter referred to as the quitline) are examined, which includes a choice of the QUITPLAN Helpline (telephone counseling plus NRT) or Individual QUITPLAN Services (2-week NRT starter kit, e-mail program, text messaging, and printed Quit Guide).…”
