Georeferencing within IFC: A Novel Approach for Infrastructure Objects

Abstract: The transfer of design data into nature is a necessary task during the construction process. For this, the geodetic Coordinate Reference System (gCRS) used during the design process needs to be accounted for and the distortions included need to be handled appropriately. In the context of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the vendor-neutral data format Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), the gCRS represents an important metadata item of the model which is included and maintained throughout the project's l… Show more

“…To support these cases, they proposed two new IFC entities which encode grid-shift parameter datasets. Jaud et al (2019) analysed the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) project where a project-specific CRS was designed to minimize geodetic distortions at construction site. However, the CRS was defined in a way that accentuated the need for an extension of the IFC schema.…”

“…These differentiate in a major data modelling decision: incur breaking changes or not. For the sake of completeness, we also include the proposal of Jaud et al (2019) in our solutions.…”

“…In addition, civil infrastructure projects often comprise of models that do not only carry do-main-specific content but also have a specific spatial context (e.g., a detailed bridge model which should be integrated into a railway track model for visualization and clash detection purposes). Furthermore, different projection and coordinate systems used for georeferencing have to be taken into account as well (Jaud, Donaubauer & Borrmann, 2019).…”

“…A triangulated irregular network (TIN) can represent the surface of a road. Jaud et al [17] address issues of IFC concerning geo-referencing. This is also relevant for large infrastructure projects (such as roads or tunnels, which need to take into account the Earth's curvature) that are often represented in custom coordinate reference systems.…”
