Abstract. The problem of georeferencing building information modelling (BIM) models is complex and in need of a comprehensive solution. We focus on the open BIM data format Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) and its georeferencing implementation. The requirements voiced by the domain experts during recent years have been collected and analysed. While IFC already covers some of the concepts, we propose an extension to the IFC schema to handle the inadequacy. Our proposal composes of two new entities: one supports geographic coordinate reference systems (CRSs) and the other enables a rigid transformation of BIM geometries. We showcase the possibilities with three examples, one for each of the required scenarios. The improvements assure much-needed semantically clear definitions of the georeferencing concept within the IFC data model. As such, the interpretation of IFC data content is unambiguous for stakeholders and software implementers.

The application of suitable data structures is an essential aspect for novel digital workflows in engineering and design processes of the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. Since model-based data exchange gets increasingly adopted by the industry, feasible and more effective methods must be considered to improve data exchange in the future. While the concept of federated model integration and container-based collaboration as demanded by ISO19650 is well established and widely adopted, it shows a number of deficiencies, in particular when it comes to consistency preservation across the domain models and the handling of design updates. Current practice relies on the exchange of complete domain models which requires the manual identification of design changes by all other stakeholders. Consistency is checked merely by collision detection, which however can cover only geometric aspects. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a comprehensive system architecture as well as techniques to identify updates in models and federate such update information by means of update patches. To this end, specific focus is put on possible mechanisms to detect changes and to integrate update patches in the receiving application.

In the context of smart cities and digital twins, three-dimensional semantic city models are increasingly used for the analyses of large urban areas. While the representation of buildings, terrain, and vegetation has become standard for most city models, detailed spatio-semantic representations of streetspace have played a minor role so far. This is now changing (1) because of data availability, and (2) because recent and emerging applications require having detailed data about the streetspace. The upcoming version 3.0 of the international standard CityGML provides a substantially updated data model regarding the transportation infrastructure, including the representation of the streetspace. However, there already exist a number of other standards and data formats dealing with the representation and exchange of streetspace data. Thus, based on an extensive literature review of potential applications as well as discussions and collaborations with relevant stakeholders, seven key modelling aspects of detailed streetspace models are identified. This allows a structured discussion of representational capabilities of the proposed CityGML3.0 Transportation Model with respect to these aspects and in comparison to the other standards. Subsequently, it is shown that CityGML3.0 meets most of these aspects and that streetspace models can be derived from various data sources and for different cities. Models generated compliant to the CityGML standard are immediately usable for a number of applications. This is demonstrated for some applications, such as land use management, solar potential analyses, and traffic and pedestrian simulations.
