659 water samples from springs and wells in the Sabatini and Vicano-Cimino Volcanic Districts (central Italy) were analyzed for arsenic (As), fluoride (F À) and radon (222 Rn) concentrations. Waters mostly sourced from a shallow and cold aquifer hosted within volcanic rocks, which represents the main public drinking water supply. Cold waters from perched aquifers within sedimentary formations and thermal waters related to a deep hydrothermal reservoir were also analyzed. The highest concentrations of As and F À were measured in the thermal waters and attributed to their enhanced mobility during waterrock interaction processes at hydrothermal temperatures. Relatively high concentrations of As and F À were also recorded in those springs and wells discharging from the volcanic aquifer, whereas waters hosted in the sedimentary units showed significantly lower contents. About 60% (As) and 25% (F À) of cold waters from the volcanic aquifer exceeded the maximum allowable concentrations for human consumption. Such anomalously high levels of geogenic pollutants were caused by mixing with fluids upwelling through faulted zones from the hydrothermal reservoir. Chemical weathering of volcanic rocks and groundwater flow path were also considered to contribute to the observed concentrations. Cold waters from the volcanic aquifer showed the highest 222 Rn concentrations, resulting from the high contents of Rn-generating radionuclides in the volcanic units. Approximately 22% of these waters exceeded the recommended value for human consumption. A specific Quality Index (QI), comprised between 1 (very low) and 4 (very high), was computed for each water on the basis of As, F À and 222 Rn concentrations and visualized through a spatial distribution map processed by means of geostatistical techniques. This map and the specific As, F À and 222 Rn maps can be regarded as useful tools for water management by local authorities to both improve intervention plans in contaminated sectors and identify new water resources suitable for human consumption.

Toxicity assessment of environmental compartments, in particular sediments as a highly complex matrix, provides a more direct way to assess potential adverse effects of pollutants present in a sample in contrast to chemical analysis estimating only a quantitative level of xenobiotics. Interactions between chemicals, formations of derivatives and the influence of chemical properties of sediments such as the organic matter content causing the intensified sorption of hydrophobic pollutants suggest that a traditional approach to the sediment quality, based only on chemical analysis may be insufficient. The presented study describes the vertical and horizontal variability of toxicity of Gdańsk Basin sediments. Based on 128 surface sediments samples and using geostatistical methods, a prediction map for the EC50 parameter was created. This allowed the evaluation of the toxicity of the surface sediment layer at any selected point of the study area. The applied analysis can be functional for many other locations worldwide. In the present study, the hypothesis about the location of toxic sediments in the vicinity of Gdańsk Deep, outer Puck Bay and close to Vistula River mouth was further confirmed.

The main sources of radiation exposure are the inhalation of radon, thoron and their decay products released from the rocks and soil, and terrestrial gamma radiation. In order to estimate the potential effects, the radon and thoron concentrations in the soil gas, the radon measurements in the groundwaters and outdoor gamma dose rates were measured at 18 different locations in Büyükorhan in the south of Bursa, which granitoid unit takes up a vast space in this area. The radon and thoron concentrations in the soil gas were found to vary from 0.54 ± 0.01 kBq m −3 to 36.25 ± 0.98 kBq m −3 (mean value 11.54 ± 2.79 kBq m −3 ) and from 14.86 ± 1.21 kBq m −3 to 1462.50 ± 26.47 kBq m −3 (mean value 174.53 ± 87.35 kBq m −3 ), respectively. The measured radon concentrations in the groundwater samples ranged from 6.89 ± 1.11 to 61.43 ± 0.55 Bq l -1 (mean value 24.85 ± 4.36 Bq l -1 ). The measured outdoor gamma dose rates varied from 68 nGy h -1 to 369 nGy h -1 (mean value 129.7 nGy h -1 ). It was observed that radon and thoron concentrations in the soil gas are controlled by the lithology of the region. Additionally, the effect of the radon and thoron concentration in soil gas on outdoor gamma dose rate is indicated in the present study.
