Gesture and Sign Language Recognition Methods

Abstract

This article deals with automatic gesture and sign language recognition from multiple viewpoints and attempts to critically review most of the work in this wide, cross‐disciplinary, and recently extremely active research area. Challenges involved in gesture and sign language recognition are presented, while different aspects of the overall recognition chain and proposed ways to tackle these challenging issues are also discussed. Numerous approaches are reviewed, not merely listing the characteristics of each work, but rather confronting critically each aspect of automatic gesture and sign language recognition attempting to deal with every challenge involved in this rapidly evolving, cross‐disciplinary research area.
