Getting the message about biobanking: returning to the basics

Abstract: Much has been written about biobanks and biobanking. Since biobanking rose to prominence in the 1990s and became a scientific discipline in its own right, the collection and distribution of human tissue samples or "biospecimens" has been the subject of much critique, debate, and assessment. However, what is the message these discussions provide the wider research community? Are they reflective of progression of a new discipline? Do they represent clarity in the field or confusion? At one point we are told that… Show more

“…Their seemingly insufficient use 48 and on-going sustainability issues raise valid questions about their effectiveness and added value. 83 In this article, we have provided the final outcomes of our project, giving an overview of current Dutch overarching challenges and presenting recommendations to create an environment that contains policy, legal, financial, and organizational factors to enable and promote sustainable biobanking. Many of the identified challenges and suggested solutions will sound familiar.…”

“…10 It is not about the noun, but the verb. 11 The passage of biospecimens from donor to researcher scientist is fundamental, and always has been, to meaningful translational research. Without it, research does not happen.…”

“…Biobanks as a method of collecting data has been in use since the 1950s (Catchpoole, 2017;Strong, 2000). In the early days of biobanking, the scientists harvested all the biological specimens they desired by their own devices and did not have a particular goal in mind when they did so (Greely, 2007).…”
