Ghrelin does not influence cancer progression in a lung adenocarcinoma cell line

Abstract: Ghrelin, an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR), is produced in the human stomach. Although ghrelin has therapeutic potential for cancer cachexia, ghrelin treatment may have a concern about accelerating cancer progression. Here, using the human lung adenocarcinoma cell line HLC-1, we investigated the effects of ghrelin on molecular mechanisms linked to cancer progression, including cell viability, proliferation, resistance to apoptosis, and mitochondrial activity. Both types o… Show more

“…Breast and colon cancer cell lines express both GHSR1a and GHSR1b (11, 29, 35). However, ghrelin receptors were not notably expressed in lung cancer cell-lines, specifically in non-endocrine subtype (75, 116). Differential expression of ghrelin receptors was even observed among different cell-lines of the same type of cancer.…”

“…Another study explored results of ghrelin on molecular mechanisms related to cancer advancement, comprising cell viability, proliferation, resistance to apoptosis, and mitochondrial activity using human lung adenocarcinoma cell line HLC-1 [151]. The study found that treatment with ghrelin had no effect on viability or proliferation capacity of the cell and hence concluded that ghrelin had no effect on cancer progression in lung adenocarcinoma cells [151].…”

“…A summary of these findings regarding GI tumor cells and highlighting the diversity of results published on this topic can be found in Table I . Ghrelin has also been reported to be expressed in experimental studies using cell lines of leukemia ( 95 ), breast carcinoma ( 96 ), pulmonary adenocarcinoma ( 97 ), pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma ( 98 ), prostate carcinoma ( 99 ), gastric adenocarcinoma ( 100 ) and colorectal adenocarcinoma ( 101 , 102 ). and it has shown pleiotropic effects in the vast majority of these tumor cell lines ( 11 ).…”
