Giant prostatic hyperplasia and its causes

Abstract: We present a case of a 59-year-old male who was admitted to the emergency department with urinary retention, with a history of lower urinary tract symptoms, with the value of serum prostate specific antigen level of 100 ng/mL and an estimated prostate size of 800 mL, according to magnetic resonance imaging. A prostate biopsy showed benign prostatic hyperplasia. Transvesical prostatectomy was performed, following additional procedure of transurethral resection of the prostate. “…Kyei M et al [14] reported a similar PSA level. In one observation, An-glickis M [15] showed that volume influenced the total PSA. Indeed, reporting the history of a patient with giant prostatic hyperplasia, the PSA went from 77.5 ng/ml for a prostate volume of 371 ml to more than 100 ng/lm when the prostate volume reached 800 ml in a context of chronic urinary retention.…”

“…Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) affects at least one-third of men over 60 years [ 1 ] and its incidence is age related [ 2 ]. The term giant prostatic hyperplasia (GPH) refers to prostates larger than 500 g [ 3 ]. We present a case of a 72-year-old man with a GPH who presented kidney injury due to bilateral hydronephrosis and no urinary retention.…”

“…Giant prostatic hyperplasia (GPH) is defined as BPH over 500 cc. 1 To date, no more than 20 cases of GPH are reported in the literature, and the largest to be treated by holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP) was 400 cc. 2 We report a HoLEP of a 696 cc GPH.…”
