Show more

“…The use of probiotic lactobacilli releases a low molecular weight thermosensitive factor that inhibits the proliferation of Giardia trophozoites in in vitro culture. These modern therapeutic strategies justify further investigation which could prove to be more applicable and useful than drugs for the treatment in endemic regions [8,52].…”

“…Giardia duodenalis is a species complex including eight morphologically indistinguishable genotypes (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H) with different host specificity [ Table-1] [1,2,[37][38][39]. Recently, some investigators have proposed species-specific names for the different genotypes of G. duodenalis [ Table-1] [40,41].…”

“…There are several pharmaceutical agents that are used in the treatment of the giardiasis including metronidazole [ 6 ], albendazole, tinidazole, and nitazoxanide [ 7 ]; some of them are administered by one dose and others (as metronidazole) need several doses along the day for two or three days. In refractory cases by resistance or reinfection the combination of two or more drugs can be necessary [ 8 , 9 ]. All chemical agents produce collateral effects like nausea, metallic taste, yellow pigmentation of the skin, hepatic damage, inefficacy in the treatment, and resistance [ 10 ].…”
