We evaluated the statistical models that best describe the selectivity of common fishing gears used in Lake Koka for four freshwater species widely distributed in Ethiopia and elsewhere: tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.), catfish Clarias gariepinus (B.), common carp Cyprinus carpio (L.), and barb Labeobarbus intermedius (R.). Sampling was conducted from October 2012 to March 2013 using gillnets (60, 80, 100, and 120 mm stretched mesh), longlines (4/0, 6/0, and 8/0 hooks size), and a beach seine with covered codend. Size at maturity (L m ) was determined for each species. The SELECT method was used to explore unimodal selectivity models for gillnet and longline gears, while the logistic function was used for beach seine. Results show that a lognormal model best described gillnet selectivity for all species, while a normal scale model best described longline selectivity for C. gariepinus. Gillnets with C100 mm mesh and longlines with [4/0 hooks could be safely used, as they allow target resources to attain L m before becoming vulnerable to fishing. The mesh size of the beach seine needs to be enlarged, as the estimated length of capture was much smaller than all L m values. The results have important management implications for protecting juveniles and mega-spawners of the studied species in Lake Koka and beyond.

SUMMARY: In the Ebro Delta coastal lagoons, one of the main anthropogenic pressures is the artificial freshwater input. Each coastal lagoon has different water management schemes causing profound changes in its physicochemical characteristics. The main objective of this water management is to favour some bird species with interest either for conservation or hunting activities. The present study assesses the influence of hydrological alteration on the fish assemblages of three coastal lagoons in the Ebro Delta. The small-bodied fish fauna was mainly composed of five families: Gobiidae, Poecilidae, Cyprinodontidae, Atherinidae and Mugilidae. Salinity was found to be the main factor structuring fish community in the lagoons. The dominant species was the common goby (Pomatochistus microps) when the lagoons reached higher salinity values, whereas the invasive eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) dominated during the period of higher freshwater inputs. The juveniles of the family Mugilidae showed low catch per unit effort, especially during the period of lower salinity. This same pattern was found for the endangered Spanish toothcarp (Aphanius iberus). Overall, introduced species were favoured by low salinity, which highlights the importance of changing the present water management by reducing the freshwater inputs in order to maintain suitable levels of salinity to favour native species that are important for both commercial and conservation purposes.

A gillnet is a common fishing gear for exploitation and fish capture at Jatiluhur Reservoir. The fish size captured by the gillnet depends on the mesh size for its selective fishing gear. Determination of gillnet mesh size is one of effort for fisheries management. The management of nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is based on gillnet selectivity and reproductive biology of nile tilapia. The aim of the research was to estimate length at the first mature (Lm) and gillnet selectivity for nile tilapia. The research was conducted at February-September 2017 through experimental fishing using gillnet with 1.0–4.0 mesh size (interval 0.5 inch). The gillnet installation was performed at six stations, namely Cihuni-Cibadak, Sungai Cikanyayan, Sungai Ciririp, Sungai Cihonje, Pasir Kole and Cilalawi. The Lm of nile tilapia was 18.3 and 23.3 cm for female and male, respectively. The total length retained in the gillnet with the highest probability for mesh size 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5; 3.0; 3.5 and 4.0 inches were 9.5; 12.5; 14.5; 18.5; 20.5; 26.5 and 30.5 cm, respectively. The minimum mesh size used for nile tilapia exploitation was ≥3 inches because it was able to catch nile tilapia with the total length larger than Lm (Lc>Lm) and with an SPR value of > 40% so that the tilapia resource in the Jatiluhur Reservoir remains sustainable.
