Ginkgo biloba and its potential role in glaucoma

Abstract: GBE has been shown to have antioxidant and vascular effects, making it potentially effective in treating glaucoma. Published data are limited but show an increase in ocular blood flow after GBE administration. Conclusive evidence is lacking regarding the effect of GBE on clinical outcomes in glaucoma patients such as visual field performance.

“…However, Guo et al (2014) did not show a statistically significant difference in visual field outcomes after Ginkgo biloba supplementation in Chinese patients. These conflicting reports suggest that racial differences may also play an important role ( Kang and Lin, 2018 ). In addition to antioxidant properties, Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow through vasodilation and reduces blood viscosity ( Kang and Lin, 2018 ).…”

“…These conflicting reports suggest that racial differences may also play an important role ( Kang and Lin, 2018 ). In addition to antioxidant properties, Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow through vasodilation and reduces blood viscosity ( Kang and Lin, 2018 ). The safety and efficacy of a combination of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents in OAG patients are currently under evaluation in a phase I clinical trial (NCT02984813) (Table 2 ).…”

“…These beneficial effects can be explained by antioxidant and vascular protector properties, which result in improved ocular blood flow after being administered. Despite extensive information, more studies are needed to provide conclusive evidence [99]. Terpenes and flavonoids are the main compounds responsible for the antioxidant ability of GBEs used against glaucoma [100].…”
