GIS and Remote Sensing-Based Multi-Criteria Analysis for Delineation of Groundwater Potential Zones: A Case Study for Industrial Zones in Bangladesh

Abstract: Groundwater is a crucial natural resource that varies in quality and quantity across Bangladesh. Increased population and urbanization place enormous demands on groundwater supplies, reducing both their quality and quantity. This research aimed to delineate the groundwater potential zone in the Gazipur district, Bangladesh, by integrating eleven thematic layers. Data and information were gathered from Landsat 8, the digital elevation model, the google earth engine, and several ancillary sources. A multi-criter… Show more

“…Uncontrolled and frequent groundwater use can cause adverse incidents, particularly in drylands like Mersin, which has a drought risk [112]. Water resources should be utilized optimistically as part of sustainable groundwater management [113,114].…”

“…The latest 32-year series (1990-2022) was used to elaborate an average annual precipitation map. Using ArcGIS functions, precipitation values were extracted from each grid cell center and then interpolated using the IDW method [Rahman et al, 2022] to obtain the average annual precipitation map.…”

“…The rainfall has a direct effect on the groundwater potential and recharge in a particular area [Chaudhry et al, 2021;Rahman et al, 2022]. This, in turn, affects the hydrogeological conditions of that area [Masroor et al, 2023].…”

“…According to previous work, many studies of LULC changes in Bangladesh have been carried out using GEE (Alam & Ahamed, 2022;Prince et al, 2022;Anjum et al, 2021;Rahman et al, 2022;Ullah & Uddin, 2021;Yu et al, 2018). There are also few studies of LULC prediction in Bangladesh using Markov-CA model with TerrSet software tools (Rahman et al, 2017;Morshed et al, 2022;Hoque et al, 2020).…”

“…In Bangladesh, few research (Alam & Ahamed, 2022;Prince et al, 2022;Anjum et al, 2021;Rahman et al, 2022;Ullah & Uddin, 2021;Yu et al, 2018) has been conducted to determine LULC changes using GEE and LULC future prediction using the TerrSet software tool both. This study may be the first time that a historical analysis of LULC changes from 1990 to 2021 (using GEE) and a prediction of LULC changes in 2041 (using Terrset software and the Marcov-CA model) have been combined in the Ishurdi and Bheramera Upazila, Bangladesh.…”
