Gis-Based Niche Modeling for Mapping Species' Habitat

Abstract: Ecological "niche modeling" using presence-only locality data and large-scale environmental variables provides a powerful tool for identifying and mapping suitable habitat for species over large spatial extents. We describe a niche modeling approach that identifies a minimum (rather than an optimum) set of basic habitat requirements for a species, based on the assumption that constant environmental relationships in a species' distribution (i.e., variables that maintain a consistent value where the species occu… Show more

“…where y is the 1  p vector of measurements taken at any point, and  is the 1  p vector of means for each environmental data layer (Clark et al, 1993;Rotenberry et al, 2006). To overcome potentially restrictive model output (Knick and Rotenberry, 1998), we partitioned the statistic via principal component analysis performed on the correlation matrix of environmental data taken at animal locations (Rotenberry et al, 2002;Browning et al, 2005;Rotenberry et al, 2006).…”

“…This approach is typically used for ecological niche modeling, in which a spatial prediction model for a given species is computed from a set of environmental parameters, or 'indicators' (see e.g. Clark et al, 1993, Knick and Dyer, 1997, Rotenberry et al, 2006. In this context, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have proven to be very useful tools for conservation because of the ease of handling various thematic layers and using multi-criteria decision trees for extracting information.…”
